Vancouver Island/Gold River Trip

August 9 – 10, 2014 …. join the Coast Riders for a weekend of fun riding to Gold River B.C.!!

We will take the Tsawwassen to Victoria Ferry. First thing Saturday morning we’ll board the 7 AM ferry at Tsawwassen and disembark at Swartz Bay. After a meetup close to there for some Island riders, we’ll ride thru Victoria, then up the Malahat Highway past Nanaimo to Parksville for lunch, then continue to Campbell River, where we will have dinner and overnight at Haida Harbourside Inn.

After a good breakfast on Sunday morning, we’ll depart Campbell River and head west on beautiful Highway 28 to our destination, Gold River, where we will also have lunch.

Time & distance to Gold River from Campbell River …

1.5 hours & 88KMs

This is a great ride with great scenery, and is one of the best rides you can do in B.C.! make sure you bring your camera!

If weather and time (most probably!) permit, we may ride the remaining 10 KMs to the end of the Gold River Highway to salt water.

After riding back to Campbell River, we will then take the inland (new) Island Highway southbound, and catch the next available ferry to the Mainland (guessing 6 or 7 PM). Riders can decide whether they wish to catch the Departure Bay ferry to Horseshoe Bay, or return via the Duke Point ferry to Tsawwassen.

A riders list/info notice will be posted on the club FaceBook page approx one month before the ride.

Hope you can make it!  Sign the event list on our FaceBook page if you interested in joining the ride.

  1. Something like thirteen bikes (14 people altogether) took part in what was a great weekends ride. Those of us who are lucky enough to already live on the island joined the mainland crew near to where they came off the ferry. From there we road, by devious route, avoiding major highways from Sannich to Gold Stream south of the Malahat. If you would imagine this portion of the trip – think: old time logging road with a coat of pavement – lots of ups and downs and curves to please everyone.

One small snafu – the group got separated – but all was made right at Cowichan bay.

We proceeded “up island” via the “small roads” passing though Maple Bay, Crofton, Chemanus, and the area of Salt Air emerging briefly onto the island highway at Ladysmith before quickly taking to the backroads of Cedar and Yellow point on our way to Nanaimo. Along this stretch we partook of the excellent food offered at the Crow and Gate Pub. North of Nanaimo we once again followed the coast up passing though many a small community.

An unexpected pleasure was a stop along the way at the home of some friends of Lester’s who gave us a tour of a most amazing collection of old motorcycles. These are no dusty museum pieces – these are real working motorcycles. Each demonstrating the amazing level of creativity possessed by their builders.

Arriving at our hotel we had a bit of a parking lot altercation with some members of “another MC club”. Fortunately no blows were exchanged. After checking in we all went out for a nice dinner and beers at the Rip Tide Marine Pub, a convenient walk away. The hotel was…. Less convenient. Sub standard rooms, and loud carrying on till 3:30 am by some of the “guests”.

It was all made up for by the ride. With Brian Chesney leading we had just an amazing ride out to Gold River and the ocean inlet beyond. Every combination of curve and up/down hill you can imagine with a back ground of great scenery.
What motorcyclist could ask for anything more? Well how about a dip in refreshing waters down at the south end of Buttle Lake after a 70 km ride of more great curves along the lake?

All in all a great day of riding – anyone who has not been on this road – put it on your list.
    Its worth the trip!

Here are a few pictures to illustrate a portion of the festivities:
